What Is Ear Surgery?
Ear surgery is a surgical procedure performed to reshape, reposition, or resize your outer ear. Injuries, malformations, or deformities can be corrected with ear surgery. Not only can it improve the appearance and positioning of your ear, but it is also performed as a reconstructive procedure for congenital anomalies and injuries.
Ear surgery may be one or a combination of procedures, including ear pinning, ear reduction, and ear augmentation.
Am I a Good Candidate for Ear Surgery?
If you are bothered by the prominence of your ears, you may be a good candidate for ear surgery. You may also opt for otoplasty if you want to attain better balance for your facial features. If you have malformed or injured ears, you can also undergo ear surgery.
Ideally, patients are non-smokers and are in good overall health with no underlying circulation problems. It is important that the ears have fully developed (typically around the age of 5 or older). You should have realistic expectations and goals before undergoing ear surgery.
Dr. Lentz will perform your Ear Surgery surgery at Advent Health Daytona Beach or Halifax Health Hospital - Port Orange.
Every surgery carries the risk of a complication, including elective cosmetic surgery. Complications are rare, but they do occur. CosmetAssure provides you with insurance coverage in the unlikely event a complication occurs with a board certified plastic surgeon. CosmetAssure is a solution to the lack of coverage for medical complications that can occur during or after your surgery.
Your Otoplasty Consultation
Your consultation will involve a physical examination of your ears. At Lentz Plastic Surgery, our patient-centered approach tailors each treatment plan to address your specific concerns. Dr. Ashley K. Lentz will also ask about your medical history to assess your health and possible complications.
The Procedure
Depending on your concerns, Dr. Lentz will employ specific techniques to correct or reshape your ears. A local anesthetic is administered before incisions are made. Incisions are usually made at the back of the ears or within the folds.
Cartilage may be manipulated, augmented, or removed to achieve the desired results. Then, the incisions are closed with stitches. The whole procedure can take two to three hours.
The Recovery Process
Otoplasty has a short recovery time, lasting for about two weeks. Following your surgery, bandages will be applied to aid in healing. You are advised to ensure you are not side sleeping to prevent putting pressure on your ears for the first two weeks. Bruising and swelling are normally experienced, along with a slight tingling sensation.
You may be able to return to work or school after two weeks. It may take several days before you can wash your hair. You might also be advised to wear compression headbands to protect your treated ears.
How Much Does Ear Surgery Cost?
The cost of ear surgery will largely depend on the type of techniques you need for your ears. The overall price will reflect the anesthetic fees and the extent of work done.
